LED wall sizes and resolutions

Arithmetic only: width divided by pitch. Real walls come in cabinet steps; the planner fits them.

This page gives the pixel resolution of a 16:9 LED wall at each common width and pixel pitch, and the wall size that carries a full HD, UHD or 8K picture at each pitch.

An LED wall has one pixel per pitch: a 2.6 mm wall carries 385 px per metre, a 3.9 mm wall 256. The resolution of a wall is its width and height in millimetres divided by the pitch, rounded down to whole cabinets in practice. The minimum viewing distance is about one metre per millimetre of pitch; the viewing distance calculator gives the comfortable and acuity figures too.

Wall size for a full picture

The wall that shows every pixel of a standard picture at 1:1, width × height in metres. A smaller wall scales the picture down; a larger one shows it with a border or scaled up.

Cabinet steps

A wall is built from cabinets, so its size moves in cabinet steps: 500 mm cabinets make 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 m widths, 600 mm cabinets 3.0, 3.6 and 4.2 m, and a 4 m brief on 600 mm cabinets is a choice between 3.6 and 4.2 m. The wall templates give the cabinet counts for the common sizes, and the planner takes a target size and a panel and returns the count, the resolution, the weight, the circuits and the data runs. Power and weight for a given area: the power and weight calculators.

Common questions

How many pixels is a 4 m wide LED wall?

Divide the width in millimetres by the pitch: 4,000 mm at 2.6 mm is 1,538 px across, at 3.9 mm 1,026 px, at 1.9 mm 2,105 px. A 16:9 wall 4 m wide is 2.25 m high, so 2.6 mm gives 1,538 × 865 px.

What size LED wall shows a full UHD picture?

Multiply the pixels by the pitch: 3,840 px at 2.6 mm is 9.98 m wide and 5.62 m high; at 1.9 mm it is 7.30 × 4.10 m; at 1.5 mm 5.76 × 3.24 m. Smaller walls scale the picture down and lose nothing but detail nobody stands close enough to see.

How close can people stand to an LED wall?

The rule of thumb is one metre per millimetre of pitch: a 2.6 mm wall from about 2.6 m, a 3.9 mm wall from about 4 m. At two to three times that the picture is comfortable to watch for a long time.
