LED wall weight and the load on the structure

This guide gives the weight of a permanent LED wall and what it asks of the structure behind it: the cabinet weight from the datasheet, the load per square metre, the depth of the build, the frame that carries it, and what a rental hang limit does and does not tell an installer. The figures come from the makers’ sheets; the structure is designed for the site by an engineer.

Cabinet weight from the datasheet

Every sheet gives the cabinet weight, and the wall’s weight is that figure times the count. The weight per square metre is the number to compare between systems, because cabinets come in different sizes: a 500 × 500 mm cabinet is a quarter of a square metre, a 608 × 342 mm 16:9 module about a fifth. The distributed load

A wall-mounted screen is a distributed load on its frame, and the frame is a distributed load on the structure behind it. A 5.00 × 3.00 m wall of Absen PL2.5 Pro V2 is 60 cabinets at 7.8 kg, 468 kg over 15 m², or 31 kg/m² before the frame. The frame adds its own weight and, more important, decides where the load enters the wall: at a row of fixings along the top, at a grid of anchors, or at the floor through a free-standing structure.

Which of those, and whether the wall behind can take it, is the structural engineer’s decision and signature. The datasheet weight and the planner’s load per square metre are the inputs to that decision, not a substitute for it. A plasterboard partition and a concrete wall are different questions with the same panel.

Depth and the build

Cabinet depth on the sheets runs from 49 mm for a thin install module to 90 or 99 mm for a rental or outdoor cabinet, and the frame adds to it. The number the architect asks for is the total build-out from the finished wall, which is the cabinet depth plus the frame and, for a rear-service cabinet, the access gap behind.

Service access is the fork. Front-service modules, whose LED modules and often whose power supplies come out from the front with a tool or a magnet, can sit close to the wall and are the norm for lobbies and boardrooms. Rear-service cabinets need a person behind them, which means a gap or a hinged frame, and that decides the depth more than the cabinet does. The sheet states the service side when the maker publishes it; where it does not, ask before the frame is drawn.

What a rental hang limit does not tell you

Rental panels publish a hanging limit: how many cabinets a column can carry from the maker’s hanging bar, 20 for a ROE Black Pearl BP2 V2 with its bars, indoors, at a safety factor of five. That figure is about the cabinet’s own frame and the bar, and it applies to a flown wall. It says nothing about a wall mounted on a structure, where every cabinet hangs on its own fixings and the column carries nothing.

Install cabinets from Sharp, Samsung and others publish no hanging limit at all, because they are not hanging systems. The planner keeps a placeholder for those so a flown rental calculation still runs, and says so; on an install job the limit is not used.

Outdoor and the wind

An outdoor wall carries wind load as well as its own weight, and the wind load on a 15 m² face can exceed the weight. Outdoor cabinets are heavier for their size, an Absen AW2.5 at 7.1 kg per 500 × 500 mm cabinet with IP65 on both faces, and the structure behind them is a wind calculation before it is a weight calculation. That is the engineer’s domain entirely; the planner gives the weight and the area.

What the planner prints

The system sheet prints the weight of every screen, its load per square metre and the cabinet depth from the sheet, with the line that the structure is designed for the site. It is the page to hand the engineer with the drawing.

Common questions

How much does an LED video wall weigh?

Indoor install panels weigh 22 to 42 kg per square metre from the makers’ sheets, so a 10 m² wall is 220 to 420 kg before the frame. A ROE Black Pearl BP2 V2 rental cabinet is 37 kg/m² and an Absen AW2.5 outdoor cabinet 28 kg/m². The cabinet weight is on every datasheet.

Can a stud wall carry an LED wall?

That is the structural engineer’s call for the specific wall, with the load per square metre and the fixing pattern as inputs. A 15 m² screen is 330 to 630 kg plus the frame, entering the wall where the frame fixes; whether the studs and the anchors take that is a calculation, not a rule of thumb.

How deep is an installed LED wall?

Cabinet depth is 49 to 99 mm on the sheets in the library, plus the frame. A front-service module can be built out at around 100 mm from the finished wall; a rear-service cabinet needs an access gap behind it, and the gap sets the depth.
